Photos surfaced online late Wednesday of President Uhuru Kenyatta dancing in Statehouse with several celebrities. The president's dance move of choice was dab, where the dancer drops the head while raising one arm and the elbow, at the same time, simulating sneezing. This happened during a voter registration campaign drive.
The photos were uploaded by government blogger Dennis Ole Itumbi who claims he is a senior director of Digital Innovations and Diaspora Communications in his social media handles.
Kenyans are not particularly amused by the events. These pictures are coming in the wake of a recent attack of a Kenya Defense Forces camp in Kulbiyow, Somalia where several Kenyan heroes paid the ultimate price of dedication to duty. The president has neither acknowledged the occurrence nor mourned the affected families, at least publicly. The country is also marred by many other problems including the drought in major parts of the country and runaway corruption in government which people feel he should prioritize.
The president's handlers, Kenyans feel, are a big part of the problem. This is not the first time an event of such nature has taken place. When Al-Shabaab staged an attack in Garissa University, the president posted photos of himself attending the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. That had consequences of grand scales.
Here are some of the reactions from social media.
