Bankrupt Jirongo Will Not Vie For Repeat Elections: IEBC Confirms

Cyrus Jirongo. PHOTO | THE STAR
In a gazette notice in the Kenya Gazette, published on 13 October 2017, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commision has left out the name of Cyrus Jirongo, who was recently declared bankrupt by the court.

Former Lugari MP and 2017 presidential candidate was declared bankrupt by a Kenyan court after financial difficulties rendered him unable to clear his more than 700 million debts owed to eight companies.
In a case heard by Judge Olga Sewe, it was directed that an official receiver be appointed as a trustee to his estate.

Below is the Gazette notice;

The notice adds the names of the rest of the candidates to the earlier notice that only listed Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga. The notice is read together with the earlier notice published on 29 September 2017.

Matiang'i Responds To Wetangula's SMS In The Most Savage Way Possible

Fred Matiang'i

Moses Wetangula had no idea what he was signing up for today when he decided to send a text message to Fred Matiang'i's personal number.
The Bungoma senator was texting the powerful cabinet secretary to offer some unsolicited advice after the man who runs two ministries in Uhuru Kenyatta's government decided to ban protests in major towns across the country.
Mr Matiang'i, why don't you engage a lawyer to advice you on the constitutionality of your action, utterances and threats to innocent Kenyans. You have no power and capacity to ban lawful protests and or demonstrations.
The minority leader in Senate and a principal in the NASA coalition must have expected a spirited fight from the minister. Or at least an argument. But Matiang'i was very brief. Matter of fact he only used one word in his reply.
Nonsense.
Where are your chills Fred Matiang'i? Where?
Of course Moses Wetangula tried to pull a comeback but received no replies.  Matiang'i had already dropped the mic.
That's exactly what you are. Arrogant, distasteful and unfit to hold public office.
Wetangula narrated his ordeal with the man who singlehandedly fought education cartels and won during a NASA presser at Okoa Kenya offices.

IEBC's Costly Mistakes: How Electoral Body Continues To Bankrupt Kenya

IEBC Chairperson, Wafula Chebukati
On Wednesday 11 October, the High Court ruled that Mr. Ekuru Aukot, who the electoral body had barred from vying in the October 26 election, was actually eligible to vie. In addition, the rest of the candidates who vied in the August elections for the presidency, are also eligible to vie. This is one of the electoral agency's costly mistakes that are running the Treasury dry, while millions suffer poverty.

First, there is the overall cost that has accrued from the uncertain situation that Kenya has been in since the August 8 elections were annulled.
Then, there is the series of court cases that the electoral body has been involved in and lost at the expense of Kenyan taxpayers.
In its structure, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has a full-fledged legal team, that draws from the best legal minds in the country. Furthermore, the chairman and CEO of IEBC are both lawyers. Many expected that the decisions made would be solely aimed at ensuring the body does not lose cases, that have very huge costs.

According to Treasury Principal Secretary, Kamau Thugge, the budget set aside for the 2017 General Election was Sh 49.9 billion, which means Kenya holds one of the most expensive elections in the world.

The PS said that the almost 50 billion budget comprises of direct and indirect election related expenses. Direct election expenses had an allocation of Sh 33.3 billion while indirect expenses are allocated Sh 16.6 billion,”

When the election was declared invalid and the Supreme Court ordered for another fresh poll, the Cabinet, in September approved an extra Sh 10 billion and IEBC asked for an additional Sh 3.7 billion.
During the presidential petition, Sh 568 million of taxpayers money was consumed in 14 days and other election related petitions cost Sh 486 million.

According to a report by the Auditor-General, IEBC had outstanding legal bills of about Sh 1 billion as at June 2013 and some 68 advocates were paid the inflated amount,  which brought the total expenditure to Sh 2 billion.
Furthermore, the Auditor-General exposed that the IEBC had paid Sh 17 million to five single sourced law firms that were not prequalified.
A further Sh 328 million was listed as payments to 30 law firms during the 2015/16 financial year, yet there were no lawful contracts.

Conservative estimates of these costs set the cost of the numerous election petitions, which are still in the courts at Sh 5 million. Adding up all these costs, taxpayers may be looking at at least 1.5 billion and 1 billion for these petitions and the presidential petition, respectively.

What a time to be a lawyer! You get paid, whether you win or lose.

Chris Msando Mom Asks The Government To Tell Her His Killers Before She Dies

Chris Msando Murder Mother

Two months after Chris Msando was brutally murdered, alongside a young lady Carol Ngumbu, not a single person has been charged in a court of law.
Kenya's amnesia is well known but one person who won't be forgetting the horrible murder in this lifetime is Chris Msando's mother.
Maria Msando is painfully living the agony of a mother whose son was killed by people who freely roam the earth with no one in their pursuit.
The 72 year old lady has said she rarely eats or sleeps  and the sadness is taking a toll on her aged body. She says the person who used to take care of her is now gone. Her biggest fear is dying before the truth is unraveled.
She recognized that there have been high profile deaths in this country before and the police have always said they would not leave any stones unturned. It is not the same case with Chris Msando's murder.

In The Name Of Baba, Uhuru Park's Name Changed To Raila Odinga Park

Daily Updates

The National Super Alliance feels it is not right that the place where they hold their demonstrations is named after the very person they are demonstrating against, President Uhuru Kenyatta alongside Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission.
And with that in bearing, NASA's lead counsel James Orengo announced to a charged up crowd gathered at Uhuru Park that they are re-branding the park from Uhuru Park to Raila Odinga Park.
James Orengo further said they are tired of hearing and meeting Uhuru's name everywhere they go. The name Uhuru appears in Uhuru Highway, Uhuru Estate, Uhuru Park, Uhuru Primary, Uhuru High School among many other public amenities.
This announcement was made the same time the opposition leaders declared their intentions to hold demonstrations every day of the week until electoral reforms are executed in the electoral body. They have their irreducible minimums they want fulfilled by IEBC.
Politics has a way of cropping into everything in this country. As it stands, Uhuru Park is named after independence and not president Uhuru Kenyatta as insinuated by opposition politicians.

Get Your Umbrellas Ready. The Rains Are Here! Kenya Met Department Says

PHOTO | THE STAR
In you are in the following areas, you are advised to get your umbrellas, raincoats and even boats if you have to. After a long wait, the short rains have finally arrived as witnessed during the heavy pounding of Nairobi and its environs on Wednesday 11 October.

According to the Kenya Met department, heavy rains are today expected to pound huge sections of the Rift Valley, Western, and Central regions.

As a result, these areas may experience flooding and thus be risky to property and life.
“Ponds and large bodies of moving water may suddenly appear in unlikely places. People should also avoid wading through these waters, when they are one-foot high,” Director of Meteorological Services Peter Ambenje (pictured) said.  The department expected the rains as seen yesterday in the South Rift Valley region and parts of the Aberdares Ranges.

The rains would then be experienced in Central Rift Valley, Western Kenya, the Aberdares and Mt Kenya highlands.

“A similar situation may be experienced on Friday [tomorrow], but may be confined to fewer areas around Mt Elgon,” he added.
The most affected areas by the downpour will be Kericho, Bomet, parts of  Narok, Kisii, and the Aberdares.

“Residents in all areas are advised to be on the lookout for flash floods as some areas, which were previously dry, may receive heavy rainfall during the late afternoon and the night,” he said.

Other areas include Samburu, Trans Nzoia, Laikipia, Bungoma, Laikipia, Nakuru, and Migori.

Teachers' Union Oppose Government's Rush To Implement New Curriculum

Omboko Milemba KUPPET Emuhaya MP ANC
Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers cannot understand why the government is so eager to put 8-4-4 system on its death bed and kill it before engaging stakeholders on how the new system will be implemented.
The government has made clear its intentions to rid this country of the 8-4-4 system and replace it with 2-6-3-3 which it has said numerous times before will enhance the quality of education in the country.
Union leaders led by Akello Misori and Omboko Milemba have termed the new system a foreign one that will kill learners' creativity. Misori also said that the new foreign syllabus will not deal with issues at hand that affect learners.
Akello Misori was part of a 36 member team that was put in place by cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i to review the current system. He is now accusing the government of imposing the new syllabus on schools.

While declaring KUPPET's intention to oppose the implementation of the new curriculum, Omboko Milemba said he will use his current position as Emuhaya MP to push for reforms in the education sector.
The government will over the next one year implement the new system in 470 schools across the country as it rolls it out countrywide over a period of time.

Tulichezwa! Raila Odinga Has Not Withdrawn From The Elections

The very much internationally publicized withdrawal of Raila Odinga from the presidential elections race has turned out to be a hoax after it came to light that Raila did not formally withdraw from the race.
In a press statement released by IEBC and signed by chairman Wafula Chebukati, the commission acknowledged receiving a notice of withdrawal from Raila Odinga and his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka but some rules governing the withdrawal of a candidate indicated they are still in the race for statehouse.
The law says that for a candidate to withdraw their name from the ballot, the must submit to the commission a duly filled statutory form 24A. Raila has neither done this nor said he intends to do this.
Many have asked why Raila decided to play this withdrawal card and convince people he was not going to run by not campaigning at all.
It is believed he is doing this to compel IEBC to concede to their irreducible minimums before the elections are conducted.
Why IEBC has conceded to most of NASA's demands, it refuses to fire its chief executive officer Ezra Chiloba and some commissioners and terminate its two contracts with IT firm OT Morpho and Dubai based printing firm al Ghurai. IEBC has cited time constraints.
The victory of Ekuru Aukot recently has messed up the plans of all parties involved in the elections with Jubilee and IEBC announcing their intentions to challenge the ruling in the court of appeal.

'Vampires' In Malawi. Fear Spreads As Vigilantes Rise To Hunt Blood-Suckers

A vampire actress in a film. PHOTO | COURTESY
At least five people have been murdered by vigilante vampire-hunting mobs since September in Malawi. As a result, a 5:00pm curfew has been imposed in the country, as rumors spread of witchcraft in the southeastern African country.

The violence has been meted by mobs hunting for people believed to drink human blood as part of magic rituals, according to various reports. As a result of the violence, the U.N. has removed staff from two affected areas, for their safety.
The nation's President,  Peter Mutharika has pledged to investigate the killings, which he explained as "of grave concern" to the government officials.
The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) report said rumors of vampirism may have spread from neighboring nation of Mozambique, though it did not specify what caused them. The report recommended a "temporary suspension" of U.N. activities in Malawi's southern districts of Phalombe and Mulanje.
Mobs have erected roadblocks to search for the alleged blood-suckers.
The eruption of vampire-driven vigilante violence in the African nation came after rumors surfaced in September that real-life bloodsuckers were creating havoc according to a  report obtained by Daily Updates.

“These districts have severely been affected by the ongoing stories of the bloodsucking and possible existence of vampires,” the agency said regarding districts in the southern part of the country.
Malawi is a country characterized by low literacy levels and incidences of witchcraft. It is not known what reasons behind the attacks on innocent residents for blood.

Tyranny Of Numbers! Jubilee's Master Plan In Action

Aden Duale. PHOTO | COURTESY
They said it. They promised it. After the August 8 General election in Kenya, the ruling Jubilee party led by President Kenyatta and his deputy had a great advantage. They had swept numerous seats in both the National Assembly and the Senate. We knew that in matters about lawmaking and amendments, they were the boss. It has begun.

The Kenyan Parliament passed a proposed amendment to the nation's election laws on Wednesday. This means that if one candidate withdraws from a repeat presidential election, the other one would be declared winner automatically.

NASA, the opposition outfit heavily criticised the legislation and boycotted the vote. However, this is futile as Jubilee have means to pass literally anything they wish.

Citing his concerns over fairness and credibility in the upcoming election, NASA leader Raila Odinga withdrew from the repeat presidential vote.

The last step in this process is that the law must now be signed by the President.

On Tuesday, the President said he "will not hesitate" to sign the election laws amendment Bill into law. Mr. Kenyatta said the contents of the bill covered all matters raised by both opposition and his party.

Speaking at a campaign rally, he said, "I have no problem with that law and if Parliament passes the bill, I will sign it,". "I don’t have any problem with it because in it are the contentious issues the Opposition raised."
When you have majority in numbers, you can know what to expect and prepare for it.

Avoid City Centre. NASA To Hold Their Biggest Demos Today

NASA demos Raila Odinga Withdraws
Despite Raila Odinga's withdrawal from the race, NASA will continue with their countrywide demonstrations to call for electoral reforms.
NASA's lead counsel in the presidential elections petition James Orengo has made clear the coalition's plan to intensify their protests against the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission.
He said that demonstrations are expected as planned from Mandera to Luanda, to Lamu. He was speaking at Okoa Kenya offices shortly after Raila Odinga withdrew his candidature from the forthcoming elections.
The areas expected to be affected the most will be in Nairobi's Central Business District as Raila Odinga's supporters match from Uhuru Park to IEBC offices and back to Uhuru Park for a rally.
James Orengo said protestors will match from Haile Selassie avenue, Moi avenue, Kenyatta avenue to Uhuru Park and then start the match again to IEBC offices.
Violence is expected as police engage the protestors. Not a single NASA protest has ever occurred without teargas canisters being involved.
Many people also get mugged as pickpockets and other thieves get on the lose to take advantage of the chaos.
Nairobi Business Community will also reportedly be on the scene protecting their business interests like they have always done.
