Serious Concerns Raised Over Kenyan Election Voter Turnout

After the Kenyan elections came to a close on October 26 amid violence in some parts of the country, all eyes were on the electoral body, IEBC to deliver timely results and avoid the mistakes they had in the August 8 election. So far, they have 'not disappointed'. In fact, they have created a new form of statistics that statisticians and voters across the country are still trying to understand. Kudos to IEBC, we are heading somewhere!.

Headlines Of Kenyan Repeat Elections On International Media

While Kenyans always complain that international media misrepresents the situation in the country, various outlets kept reporting and had staff on the ground during and after the repeat presidential election. They continued with their role of informing the world on the developments in East Africa's economic hub. Here are some headlines of major outlets across the globe.

What came out of Kenya's election rerun ?

When they urged the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission to go ahead with the scheduled October 26 presidential election rerun, the ruling Jubilee coalition probably expected that they would at least get the same number of voters to come out and vote for President Uhuru Kenyatta as did in the original August election.

Kenya election turnout at 33%, down from 80% in last vote

The 33% turnout was considerably lower than at the initial poll held in August, when almost 80% of the 19.6 million registered voters took part. Kenya's highest court nullified the first election -- won by incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta -- over irregularities raised by veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, paving the way for this week's vote.

Turnout of 34.5 percent in Kenya vote re-run: election commission head

NAIROBI (Reuters) - An estimated 6.55 million Kenyans voted in Thursday's presidential election re-run, just 34.5 percent of registered voters, Wafula Chebukati, election commission chairman, said on Twitter. Turnout in the August vote that was later annulled by the courts was 80 percent.

Kenya Elections Marred by Clashes, Tear Gas and a Boycott

Kenyans cast ballots on Thursday in the second presidential election in nearly three months amid a boycott by the main opposition leader and clashes in some areas that turned deadly. Though the majority of the voting occurred peacefully, at least four people were killed, The Associated Press said.

Kenya election: less than half of those eligible thought to have voted

Early estimates suggest that less than half of Kenya's eligible voters cast their ballots in the country's controversial presidential election on Thursday, raising fears of fresh instability and potential violence. Votes were still being counted on Friday but the chairman of the country's election commission, Wafula Chebukati, tweeted overnight that 6.55m ballots had been cast - just 34.5% of registered voters.

Man Under Pressure? Chebukati Gives Go Ahead For Election

IEBC Chairperson, Wafula Chebukati. PHOTO | IEBC
After the highly publicized resignation of IEBC Commissioner, Roselyn Akombe, Mr. Chebukati addressed the press and said he could not guarantee credible polls because of a divided commission. In an announcement on Wednesday, he now says that all systems are on and the repeat elections would happen on Thursday 26 October.

In the earlier statement, he said, in part;
I am convinced that without critical changes in the key secretariat staff we may not have a free ,fair and credible election. I ask the staff who have been adversely mentioned to step aside and allow the project team to function without interference.

In his statement today, October 25, Mr Chebukati said that IEBC will open polling stations across the country at 6 am on October 26.

He said the election will go on as per plan and mentioned that relevant government authorities had given assurances on security and preparedness for the poll.

Moreover, the electoral body chairman said a ruling made Wednesday morning by High Court Judge George Odunga that the appointment of constituency returning officers and their deputies is illegal does not stop the officers from overseeing the presidential election.

Mr Chebukati also said that where there will be any problems of voting, the polling officer will inform IEBC of the situation and the election can be postponed to another date. We cannot confirm if the concerns he raised a few days ago have already been solved.

Raila Declares That NASA Is Now A Resistance Movement

Raila Declares That NASA Is Now A Resistance Movement

The world watched as supporters of the NASA coalition streamed into Uhuru Park on Wednesday 25 October afternoon even after the Nairobi County had asked the police to cordon off the park. Earlier, the coalition had said that they would give a major announcement. When Raila Odinga declared that NASA was no longer a party but a national resistance movement, heads turned and followers cheered.

Tomorrow, therefore, we return our original assignment. That assignment at the start of the current journey was and remains that we will be the people who will end electoral fraud not only in Kenya but in all of Africa.  We are the team that will uproot the evil culture of sham elections with pre-determined outcomes.
We fought for multi-parties and a new constitution and we won.
Tomorrow we begin with new determination the battle for electoral justice, where government is established in no way other than through free, fair and credible elections.
We must rise to the occasion and save democracy not only for ourselves but for all of Africa. We remind the people of Kenya that in this region, we are the last country standing and fighting for democracy. If Kenya succumbs to dictatorship, all of Africa will be in danger.

But we must take courage that although we are pivotal, we are not alone in our democratic ambitions. Across Continent, we have comrades in the people of Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, the Gambia, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Botswana, Togo and South Africa who insist that every vote must count and every vote must be counted; the Constitution must be respected and the rule of law upheld.

Calling it the Uhuru Park Declaration, Raila Odinga said;

From tomorrow, the duty of every citizen who loves freedom, who respects our Constitution, of every patriot, is to resist dictatorship, and to fight to restore a government established in compliance with the Constitution. The only government that can be so established, is a government elected in a free, fair and credible election.
Also: We Will Kill This Cat. You Will See. Raila Says
By attempting to establish an unlawful government, Uhuru and Ruto have invited us to exercise or sovereign power directly as enshrined in the very first article of our Constitution. The invitation is accepted.

  • From today we are transforming the NASA Coalition into a resistance movement.
  • Embark on a national campaign of defiance of illegitimate governmental authority and non-cooperation with all its organs.
  • Boycott the goods and services offered by the businesses for whose benefit dictatorship is being established.
  • We shall convene a PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY for the purpose of charting our way back to constitutionalism and democracy.
  • Mobilize all progressive forces in the country to ensure that a fresh, free and fair presidential election is organized within 90 days.

Stay Indoors Tomorrow Or You May Die. NASA Tells Supporters As They Cancel Demos

Withdrawing the earlier plan they had to have demos during election day on 26 October, the NASA coalition on Wednesday afternoon said that supporters should just avoid the vote. The Coalition leader, Raila Odinga, said that there was  a high risk that supporters would be engaged by police who would not hesitate to kill them.

In the statement, the said:
So what do we do tomorrow?  Do not participate in any way in the sham election.  Convince your friends, neighbours and everyone else not to participate. Instead, we advise Kenyans who value democracy and justice hold vigil and prayers away from polling stations.  We are aware that the blood thirsty regime is planning to use every excuse to massacre our people. Let us deny them that chance.
As we do these, we must always remind ourselves that we face these challenges as Kenyans, united in the suffering from the tribulations brought upon this country by Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto. None of us is the beneficiary of this tyrannical two-some. The only beneficiaries of this villainous regime are friends and relatives of its Kingpins.
After withdrawing from the election, the NASA principals had alluded that voting day would see the "mother of all demos."

In a much ANTICIPATED address to the nation at Uhuru Park, the NASA leader today said that whatever happens, they will the cat. He referred to President Uhuru Kenyatta and his government as a cat that has been eating chickens.

As a result, the opposition chief, who withdrew from the repeat election after the August 8 election was annulled by the Supreme Court of Kenya.
Raila joked that a cat may be killed either using a rope around it's neck or tied into a sack and thrown into water.
He said that there was no way Kenyans will suffer injustice while the government infringes on their rights and interferes with independent bodies such as the electoral commission or the Supreme Court.
He reiterated that all of his supporters should not vote because that was a sham election that was pitting Uhuru Kenyatta against himself while the other candidates were just flower girls.

Raila Confirms Roselyn Akombe Was The NASA Mole In IEBC

NASA leader Raila Odinga has come out to declare Roslyn Akombe a heroine who outsmarted government machinery that was out to terminate her life.
Raila also confirmed he was in communication with Akombe while she was still a commissioner at the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission.
Speaking at Keroka Market in Nyamira County, where Roslyn Akombe and Justice David Maraga hail, he said the government had frustrated Akombe constantly during her tenure at the embattled commission.
The former prime minister narrated Akombe's predicaments in the hands of police officers at the airport when she tried to flee the country saying the police had tried to strip her naked to recover any documents she had that may have been revealing of what happened during the bungled elections.
He also said that the former commissioner made a second attempt to escape that actually worked when she made her fellow commissioners believe she would be joining them in Dubai only to change route and fly to New York.
Raila also took the chance to say that they are not fools to believe that Ezra Chiloba's three week break would not interfere with the elections' credibility saying he stands by his irreducible minimums and would not participate in the elections which are now just 2 days away.

Journalist Who Insulted Ida And Wished Raila Death By Water Dies In Lake Nakuru Helicopter Crash

In an extremely bizarre tweet, Sam Gitau sensationally claimed Joe was the man having an affair with Ida Odinga while Raila Odinga (whom he referred to as Joshua Bandia) was in the presidential debate.
When someone pointed out to him that his utterances were unnecessary and a low blow, he quickly said he cared little.
In yet another shocker, Sam Gitau also hoped Raila Odinga would lead his supporters into Lake Victoria and drown while uprooting water hyacinth. He wished the former prime minister death by water.
When a helicopter that was ferrying people to a Jubilee campaign event crashed into Lake Nakuru, one notable individual who was among those on board was Sam Gitau.
Kenyans showed the man, who was part of Susan Kihika's media team, no mercy as they reminded him in his death the things he chose to write in the internet while still alive.
Supporters of Raila Odinga were neither ashamed nor fearful to express their happiness after his demise saying it was instant karma.

Nakumatt Shuts Down Busia And Bungoma Branches

Nakumatt Shuts Down Busia And Bungoma Branches

The trend is becoming too obvious now and not a month passes without Nakumatt shutting down a branch or two. This time round Busia and Bungoma are the victims of the purge.
We can only imagine the agony of being part of Nakumatt staff. Your job is always hanging on the line as you await the closure of your branch.
The efforts by the retail store seem not to be helping the situation. Their merger deal with Tuskys has evidently not worked as more than three branches have been closed since the merger deal that was to see Tuskys help its big brother to restock during this time of turmoil.
Many are speculating that closure of Nakumatt Ukay will be last nail on Nakumatt's coffin. We hope it is not soon.

Dark Days As Police Shoot Kenyans Protesting A Mungiki Meeting

Dark Days As Police Shoot Kenyans Protesting A Mungiki Meeting

In one of the darkest moments in the history of the Kenya police force, police officers turned the muzzles of their guns to the residents of Lucky Summer and shot at them while they were protesting the ongoing meeting of the outlawed Mungiki sect.
The same people who the police were supposed to arrest and disperse were now being protected from the very people that they were planning to harm.
Residents of Lucky Summer became suspicious of the meeting when they discovered that not a single woman was in attendance and activities that could be only be deemed ritual like seemed to be going on.
The meeting, which attendees said was a prayer meeting, consisted of slaughtering of goats and smearing of blood.
Tensions are high in the country and many citizens have expressed their fears that politicians might turn to outlawed sects to achieve their objectives.
Internal Security cabinet secretary was caught on camera saying he will instruct his officers to look away when members of Chinkororo decide to slap those trying to prevent others from voting. Kenyans have also reported activities by Mungiki in their estates and during demonstrations.
Groups like Mungiki and Chinkororo are known to use excessive force when carrying out activities that fund their organizations. They amputate and maim individuals that refuse to follow their orders and are some of the most trigger happy people in this continent.

Two trucks that had been packed behind the building, being used as a store, were crushed and destroyed, under the weight of debris.
Owners of the building have since claimed that no one was inside the building at the time it was collapsing.

Moses Kuria: Raila Odinga Met With Al Shabaab, MRC
Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has come out to allege that Raila Odinga, former Lagdera MP Farah Maalim and Mombasa governor Hassan Joho met with the senior leadership of Al Shabaab and Mombasa Republican Congress to plan chaos during the elections.
The MP sensationally claimed the group met in Raila's home in Karen and now wants the former prime minister to be charged with treason.
Flanked by other leaders in the Jubilee party like Murang'a senator Irungu Kangata, Moses Kuria said the former prime minister should bow out of politics in peace and wait for the next five years to run for office again.
Moses Kuria is known to make wild utterances against Raila Odinga and has on several occasions wished him death saying that would be a great gift from God for Kenya.
He asked DPP Tobiko Keriako to act by launching investigations against those he mentioned.
Moses Kuria is the leader of Mbele Iko Sawa outfit that is campaigning for the reelection of Uhuru Kenyatta. Ababu Namwamba is also part of that group.
