TSC Warns Of Impending Crisis As More TTC Students Fail Their Exams

The Teachers Service Commission has raised fears over the rising number of students getting referrals in the Teachers Training Colleges around the country.
Many students are either failing flatly or getting referrals hence unable to graduate until they sit for the exams again.
Speaking during a graduation ceremony in Meru, the chief executive of Teachers Service Commission Nancy Macharia said that the rising trend will affect the quality of education in the country.
In the college where Nancy Macharia was attending the graduation, 145 students had received referrals in their exams hence were unable to graduate.
Another college had more than 280 referrals in 2016 and many other colleges across the board had also been affected.
The CEO said if this is not addressed, the country could find itself in a situation where there is an acute shortage of teachers.
She said they were holding consultative meetings to avert this impending disaster.

Excellent talent is like cream. It always rises to the top at some point. While the global animation and illustration industry is often a preserve of artists from the US, Europe, and Asia, there is hope.

Twenty-five-year-old Nyambura Kariuki describes herself on her Twitter bio as a cartoonist who is still evolving. We beg to disagree when we judge her work because she is clearly levels above what we have seen in the local scene.

Miss Kariuki heard that celebrated Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong'o is set to release a children's book called Sulwe in January 2019 and she decided to 'shoot her shot'.
In a tweet captioning the actress, the young illustrator boldly introduces her work;
Superb, isn't it?
Well, after hundreds of retweets, her tweet caught the attention of Jamaican star musician, Ce'Cile and she commented,
Those five words mean a lot to anyone on cue for introduction into the global scene. Now we wait for Lupita to see this and celebrate what happens after. It will be phenomenal for this talented artist.

Miss Kariuki has a link to her Behance portfolio, which serves the work she has done to date. We took a peek and here are some of her art projects.

Revealed: Why Kenyan Media Invites Noisy Analysts To Keep You Glued To The Screen

Ever since the mess that was the double-legged Kenyan elections, we have had a trend crop up. Strange men and women have repeatedly appeared on our screens. They have been interviewed by numerous TV stations and they have been often pushed to their limits and maybe walked out of the studio or something like that.
One dirty rule in alley negotiations is attacking the persona or interfering with a person's emotions. After that, you can have a field day in embarrassing them.
In his latest book, Requiem for the American Dream, American intellectual Noam Chomsky puts it so succinctly;
Dispatching journalists into the field to gather information costs money; hiring a glib bloviator is relatively cheap, and inviting opinionated guests to vent on the air is entirely cost-free. It wouldn't work if it weren't popular, and audiences, it turns out, are endlessly absorbed by hearing amplified echoes of their own biases. It's divisive and damaging to the healthy functioning of our political system, but it's also indisputably inexpensive and, therefore, good business.
Mr. Chomsky was talking about the American society but this clearly reflects our own Kenyan scene.
Do you celebrate when a guest on TV puts down another not on the basis of fact but silly jokes?
Maybe you even get angry when a certain truth is said and you go on social media to vent.
Truth is these speakers say what you would like to hear and you feel good but mostly nothing is solved at the end. This is just business by media and as Mr. Chomsky states, it is divisive.

Forums and public discourses are healthy for a working democracy, but when we recycle guests to soothe the egos of our viewers, we are not solving anything.
These days, any politician believes that they are political scientists and anything they say is true and logical.
Sadly, the masses think so too.

Raila Odinga has once again proved his unpredictable brand of politics by offering an olive branch to deputy president William Ruto.
Speaking at a funeral in Kipkelion East, the former prime minister addressed William Ruto directly saying it was going to be hard for him to ascend to the presidency without his support.
Raila Odinga reminded the deputy president of the work they did in 2007 and said his influence would play a big role in the race.
These remarks by the former prime minister brings a new dimension in the 2022 politics that have already started heating up even before Uhuru Kenyatta forms his cabinet that will run government for the next five years.
During the same burial for William Koech in Kedowa, Raila Odinga also made hints he would support his deputy in the NASA coalition Kalonzo Musyoka.
The 2022 race is already crowded with many viable candidates having secret consultative meetings to ensure they stay on edge. Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula have already made clear their intentions to run. They are both principals in NASA.
William Ruto is favored by incumbency but it remains unclear if he will welcome the support of Raila Odinga who has constantly said that William Ruto is the most corrupt person in government.
Raila Odinga continues with his hard line stand that he does not recognize the presidency of Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kenya: A Country Where Engineers Sell Insurance And Bankers Sell Shampoo

The script they sold to us was pretty straightforward. Toil in primary school, struggle in high school, labour in college and graduate. That is where things will get interesting,. They said.
So we did exactly that and in our final year in campus, we celebrated and had daydreams. We knew (or hoped) that at worst, we would send out a few applications and get excellent jobs.

Yes. With our degrees in Engineering and Pharmacy, our entry level jobs would be superb.
The Kenyan system has a gap between actually completing academic coursework and graduation.
So for between five to eight months, we were hanging around. Happy to clear university but still jobless.
We saw the numerous tasty adverts.
The candidate must have graduated with a minimum of Second Class Honours (Upper Division). They said.
See we had not yet graduated. Technically. All we had were provisional transcripts, which are hardly sufficient to get a sweeper job at an insurance company.
Anyway, eight months until we get our final certificate. Not so far.
Wrong.
Something changes when you complete school. Your parents no longer consider you a child, therefore no pocket money. What for? Buy alcohol? No way.
So there we were. Stuck at home. Meeting friends occasionally. Broke.
All we did was watch the latest movies and TV series.
Our mothers told us to try to apply here and there. We sort of did. Or didn't. Everyone was asking for at least one year experience and our graduation certificate.
Well, at least we had sixteen years experience in sitting for exams. Unfortunately, that did not count.
So laze around until graduation.
They wanted a graduation fee from us.
Why was it not factored into our fees since our first year on campus?
Of course. Inefficient system.
We had to hire the gowns. We had no money. We had to get loans or no graduation.
Daddy, please help.
Our parents gave us the money. But the look on their faces was clear. Let this be the last time.
So graduation rolls in. The glitz, the glamour. This meant the 'fanfare' and the 62-seater bus from the village that brought aunts and uncles we never see.
'Our daughter has graduated.' They said.
Those celebrations trick you into thinking the system is smooth. Easy. Straightforward.
It is not until months later that we realized. Holy mother of whoever! We are on our own.
There are two types of employers. Those that have the courtesy of telling you your CV sucked.
Then the rest. Those who make you question if you really sent your job application.
Did I really hit send? Let me confirm in my sent items.
Yup. I did.
Silence.
So days turned into weeks into months. We could almost hear our parents complain and claim we were baggage.
All we did was eat, sleep and watch movies.
Some of our lucky friends got jobs. Rumour has it that they have friends in high places.
The only friends we have that reach high places are those who smoke weed.
The choice of words starts to change.
'Unajua hufai kudharau kazi. Kazi ni kazi.'
But I have a degree in Electrical Engineering.
'Utakula hio degree?'
We were slowly beaten into submission.
Our friend in a high place heard that there is this new scheme in town. Sell shampoos and beauty products and get a commision.
My goodness! The picture he painted was rosy.
We only needed ten clients and we would stop working. We would get a cut in all that they sell. Millions.
It's been two years now. I hate this job. I live with a friend. We share costs. I camouflage when I see friends from way back. They seem to be doing well. Judging from their Facebook and Instagram posts. Maybe.
Some of us sell insurance.
Kenyans hate that stuff.
So we sometimes lie to close a sale.
We just want to survive.
We wish we saw the reality while in school.
Never wait to clear school to start making a life for yourself.
The system is rigged.
Learn the rules before you come out here.
We have learned them. It will take a while to get out.
We'll do it.
We have to.

Jamhuri High School Students Butchering Each Other Over Religious Differences

Jamhuri High School Students Butchering Each Other Over Religious Differences

Tension is high in Jamhuri High School as students take on each other with pangas, knives and other crude weapons over what has been termed as religious differences among students.
Several students are currently in hospital nursing deep knife wounds and others have been treated and discharged.
The school principal is among those who have been stabbed in the incident and 35 students have been confirmed injured.
Our sources in the school tell us some some Muslim students confronted their Christian counterparts and demanded that they convert to Islam or leave the school immediately.
The Christian students refused to yield and instead chose to retaliate with similar demands leading to violent altercations.
Apart from bodily injuries inflicted on each other, the students also broke window panes in the school.
The school has since been shut down indefinitely.
The police have since been deployed to the scene and the situation so far contained. This is not the first time violence is being experienced in the city school.
This is a developing story and we will keep you updated.

Wilson Sossion In New Clash With TSC Over His Sacking

Wilson Sossion In New Clash With TSC Over His Sacking

Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary General Wilson Sossion has chided the Teachers Service Commission for firing him saying you cannot allege to fire someone who left on his own volution more than 15 years ago.
In a letter addressed to Wilson Sossion, who is also a nominated Member of Parliament, the Commission through its chief executive Nancy Macharia informed him that his employment to the commission had been terminated.
Wilson Sossion was fired after failing to resign from the commission when he received the parliament nomination from the Orange Democratic Movement.
The law requires that any civil servant who receives a political nomination or decides to run for such an office must inform their employer and resign.
Alongside Wilson Sossion, the commission has also moved to fire Omboko Milemba, Emuhaya MP and KUPPET chairman and Ronald Tonui, Bomet Central MP and KUPPET assistant treasurer.
But in a quick rejoinder, Wilson Sossion has accused TSC of malice and lashed out at Nancy Macharia for being in bed with those seeking political mileage.
The secretary general says he resigned as a public school teacher in 2001 and has only been receiving pension from the commission. He claims there was no need to notify the commission of his nomination when he had resigned years ago.
He says the termination does not hold water.
