KochoKocho. How Safaricom Holds Kenya's Telco Market By Its Balls
Companies manipulate you everyday to use their products. Through promotion after promotion, Safaricom has such a strong grip on the Kenyan market that a new entrant is entertaining suicidal thoughts. Worse still, as they get richer every year, it becomes even harder to remove them at the top.
Every other time, Safaricom subscribers get messages of a new promo in town. The model is always the same, it's just the name that changes. Now parading itself under 'Shukrani Kochokocho Kenya Nzima' promotion, Safaricom has Kenya by its balls. The grip is not loosening any time soon.
Out of all subscribers participating in these competitions, less than 5% win something tangible. Like the proverbial stick and carrot, Safaricom dangles the carrots that has users spending even more. By the end of these promotions, they make so much money that giving out the more than 100 million is a piece of cake.
Using an almost similar model with betting companies, giving out a jackpot or a grand prize is a clever tactic. Millions will spend with the hope of winning that jackpot. Statistically, only a few can win. It is a model that will always work because humans always dream of a better future.
With a solid grip on mobile money MPESA, the company continues to make supernormal profits and pay millions in taxes, which makes the government happy. It is therefore difficult for the government to punish the same entity fattening their pockets.
With one of the most expensive internet out there, Safaricom continues to set high prices because most people have no other option.
The money continues to roll in.

Boniface Mwangi Accuses Police Of Killing Caroline Mwatha In Emotional Article
Activist Boniface Mwangi has come out all guns blazing and squarely blaming the police for their involvement in the murder of the late Caroline Mwatha. He points the accusing finger and goes ahead to raise questions that the police will definitely be uncomfortable about.
Caroline Mwatha was murdered. Police have presented their version of what transpired and identified the murder suspects, yet many questions still beg for an answer. We don’t know how she ended up in the clinic.
He starts with the claim itself. Caroline Mwatha was murdered. He says the missing links in the story are clear evidence that we have not been told the whole truth.
Did she walk there by herself? Was she threatened, or coerced to go to that clinic? To date, her phone is still missing.
He raises questions on how Ms Mwatha's phone is still missing. The police earlier released a statement and the message exchange between Ms Mwatha and her alleged boyfriend.
Perhaps the key point of Mr Mwangi's article is this:
It is not lost on us that the people who celebrated Caroline’s death are the police hit squad, nicknamed “Hessy”. Hessy isn’t an individual, but a bunch of sadistic police officers who routinely execute suspects in Eastlands every other day.Daily Updates earlier wrote an article about the post by Hessy wa Dandora saying they did not kill Ms Mwatha. They also added the number of abortions she had done.
After Caroline’s body was found, they did a long post on Facebook. In October 2018, Kenya Police executed 11 people in Dandora and in November, more young people were shot dead.
Reports saying that the morgue records were altered with at least add some weight to the claim that Ms Mwatha could have been killed. The story remains mysterious, however, because it has always been difficult to reopen a case that the police have already closed.
I don’t know the exact circumstances of Caroline’s death, but I am certain she was murdered.

You Can Use Your Money But Don't Floss Too Much, NYS Suspect Told
Kenya continues to prove why it is on the list of most corrupt countries in the world. Lillian Omollo, who was Youth and Gender Affairs Principal Secretary implicated in the NYS scam has been allowed to use her 10 bank accounts again.
The suspects accounts were frozen by a court order during the investigations in which she is among the 44 who were accused.
The Lady Justice Hedwig Ong’udi gave back permission to use her accounts and asked her not to floss too much but just use 2 million shillings a month. This would go to her personal expenses.
She has six Equity Bank accounts and four Diamond Trust Bank accounts.
There is a lot of room for her to adjust her lifestyle to fit into her current financial status given that there is high public interest in the money from NYS which led her to be charged with a criminal offense, and which cannot just be wished away.
The suspect had filed a petition to have access to her accounts back. She argued, through her lawyers, that she needs money for day to day expenses. She had asked for 6.8 million monthly limit but it seems she will still be happy with the sh 2 million.
So how much do the 10 accounts really hold?
How has she survived ever since the accounts were frozen. Does she have extra accounts elsewhere?

High Court Postpones Legalization Ruling On Gay Love Making In Kenya
The High Court of Kenya, through Judge Chacha Mwita has postponed the case of the ruling on legalization of gay love making in Kenya. Activists behind the movement have pushed a hashtag #Repeal162, which if confirmed would make it legal in the country.
The ruling has been postponed to May 2019 after Judge Chacha Mwita said that the decision not ready as some judges were busy.
Our sources say that considering that this is a very sensitive matter in the African context, the court is treading carefully and consulting with everyone in influential government posiitions.
Here is how Twitter reacted:
Reasons #Repeal162 ruling postponement:— DENIS NZIOKA (@DenisNzioka) February 22, 2019
Bench has not 'finalised' their decision.
"Administrative challenges and full dockets have made them unable to decide."
“We are still planning when to regroup,” judge says. “The judges have asked me to ask you to give us up to May.”
The ruling of #repeal162 has been postponed 😭😭😭. The bench has not finalized making their decision.— The Commission (@NGLHRC) February 22, 2019
To say we are disappointed would be an understatement
"Constitutions are not meant to protect only the individuals that we like, and to leave unprotected those who are unpopular, or those the majority may find morally objectionable. Nor should a person’s identity be the reason to deny them protection" #Repeal162— FRANKLINE MICHAEL OTIENO (@frankmichaelO) February 22, 2019
Morning from Nairobi’s packed Milimani High Court, Room 1, 3rd floor, where history could be made today in the fight for #LGBTIQ rights in #Africa. #Kenya activists are waiting for a verdict in their challenge of laws criminalizing homosexuality. #repeal162— Matina Stevis-Gridneff (@MatinaStevis) February 22, 2019

I Love You To Death, Caroline Mutoko Sends Sweet Message To Akothee
Veteran radio queen Caroline Mutoko has come to the defense of the chair-lady of single mothers Akothee who has been on the receiving end of online users who felt her choice of dancing moves and clothes were inappropriate during a recent concert.
Here's a transcribed version of the video she uploaded on her YouTube channel.
Hey you caught me having a look at all the things you love to talk about and then something I like to talk about. Can we get rid of one completely inane and unnecessary conversation. Akothee and whether she's a role model to our daughters. Let me ask you something. Who are your children that they listen to Akothee? I know who she is and other than the song she did with Diamond I don't know any other song she has done and I'm saying this because I'm very well aware that Akothee's target market is by no means teeny boppers, is by no means females of a certain age. They follow her because they love her boldness on Instagram I do too. I mean sometimes she says something and I'm like I love you. And you know what, there's a lot of closet men and women who can't get over her boldness. She's the kind of chick you love to hate but then again you can't but admire her because she's unapologetic. But this whole saga of oh my gosh she isn't a role model to our children. Who are your children that they listen to Akothee. Let's just start there cuz you really need to check yourself first. And Britney Spears once said this, and I believe a few other musicians have said this it is not their job to raise your children. It is not Akothee's job to be a role model to your children. If you do not agree with how she is and what she does your job is to do what our mothers did is actually point her out and say huyu anafanya bad manners. That one is not a woman you want to be like, but you act like it's her job to mentor your kids and then force it on her? This is the other thing I can't stand that you wake up and decide that any person with a public profile needs to be shackled into this box. And I always put it this way so you're like I'm going to force it to be a role model so please fit into this box and if you don't I'm gonna keep pushing. I don't care, okay. I am doing me. If you feel that what I do stand for does not work for your brand of parenting your lifestyle or even your aspirations, step away. But do not go and ask somebody else who's getting on with their thing their way and they're a full grown up, that you've got to be wonderful because I think my child might want to be like you. Your children are listening to Justin Bieber and Rihanna and I don't know and Avril and King Kaka and if you're in your 20s I'm hoping that right now Cardi B is you know all you want. Could you explain to me exactly at what point you've decided that Akothee owes you anything? I'm just I'm also tired by that thing. Akothee keep doing what you do I love your style on Instagram baby. I don't know any of your music and I haven't been to any of your concerts. And here's the thing because I can't sing sing along. But if you ever asked me out to tea I would come happily. But really which cool young person, which young person in any part of Kenya is listening to Akothee? She's never written music for small people. She's never gonna be asked to do music for Sesame Street. She's not gonna be invited to club Kiboko if it's still there (now you know how old I am), is she? She's not that person she has never marketed herself as such and I don't think she's trying to be. So um before you get your knickers in a twist the next time, Ask yourself, is that person truly writing music for our kids? And if she is or you've decided I think you need to look at your choices again. I have no beef with Akothee whatsoever. Keep going mama love you to death.

Kenya's Swahili Music Gaaad Masauti Belongs To A Higher Dimension
We heard the song once. Then we heard it again, this time more careful in our listening. That was enough to agree that Masauti a.k.a Kenyan Boy of the Kiboko fame is a legend. The only reason he is not ruling the Youtube count yet is just because he is a victim of circumstances. Daily Updates Music looks at the talent of a Kenyan owning the modern Swahili vibe.
The song ruling the airwaves now is Kiboko. A Masterpiece.
The beginning pulls you right in.
Masauti, Kenyan Boy...
You would be forgiven to think that this is a Tanzanian song.
Well, 100% Kenyan.
The latest song is Sare, a testament to the prowess of this musician.
At the moment, Otile Brown is king in Kenyan Swahili music scene.
Fans have already asked for it, but a collabo between these two will be certified fire!
Listen to Kenyan, Play Kenyan.
Here is one of our very best.

David Ndii Delivers Back to Back Blows Forcing These Two To Delete Tweets
We are always watching the interwebs for interesting showdowns. As the discussion about affordable healthcare rages on, two tweeps decided to challenge economist David Ndii. His responses forced both of them to delete their tweets. Luckily, #TheInternetNeverForgets
As covered yesterday, one Karen Omollo mocked poor parents saying they should not have kids, or use the 9 months to save up.
Mr. Ndii found time to join the discussion:
Tweeps— David Ndii (@DavidNdii) February 21, 2019
This law student is prepping for a career in money laundering. As you can see from the resume is below, she is 100% ethics proof (her good grades in legal philosophy and ethics are likely sexually transmitted). Please retweet her employer might be on your TL https://t.co/zrbzCmq5EU
Then, the red side (supporters of Karen) took it upon themselves to respond.
He responded but Muchiri later deleted the tweet when Twitter got too hot.
Then, another tweep took the liberty to air his views:And God forbid you or someone close to you suffers a debilitating disease or road accidents requiring millions and long term care. If it happens lets not see any harambee appeals. Also be aware those children could turn out to be geniuses, and yours die young from drug abuse. https://t.co/ZV9wfF7ge6— David Ndii (@DavidNdii) February 21, 2019
Yes, Mr. Ndii. What if Teddy's father had 3 kids?
Ouch.Which other 2 of your siblings would you rather were not born (I am assuming you are the other one). https://t.co/nc8kKjoe2l— David Ndii (@DavidNdii) February 21, 2019
Okay, simple maths. If Teddy's father just got 3 kids. Then 3 of his siblings would not exist.
So the question is, which 3?
We also do not know.
They both deleted the tweets but the internet never forgets.

Nigeria Decides 2019: Federal Government Declares Friday As Public Holiday
The federal government of Nigeria has declared that Friday 22nd will be a public holiday as the country prepares for the rescheduled Saturday 23rd presidential and national assembly elections.
A statement released by the ministry of interior on Wednesday stated that banks and other essential services providers would be exempted from this public holiday.
The work free day is understood to have been provided to citizens to enable them to go back to their voting units to exercise their constitutional right.
The federal government also ordered the early payment of civil servants so that they would have enough funds for transportation and food during the voting period.
Africa's most populated country was supposed to hold its elections on Friday 16, but the Independent National Electoral Commission postponed it a few hours to the elections citing logistics challenges.
Nigerians will now vote on February 23 for the presidential and national assembly candidates, and March 9 for the the governorship/state assembly candidates.

Introducing The Galaxy Fold. Samsung’s Foldable Phone Is Finally Official
During the Galaxy Unpacked event in San Fransisco, Samsung made it clear to everyone that their foldable half tablet, half phone is coming out on April 26. Its starting price will be a staggering $1980 or Ksh198,252.
The first time Samsung teased the idea of launching a foldable phone was back in November last year in November. The Galaxy Unpacked event gave enthusiasts of the company's products a clearer glimpse of the Galaxy Fold.
Samsung is using a new 7.3 inch Infinity Flex display. This allows the phone to have a tablet size screen that can be folded to fit into a pocket.
They are using a sophisticated hinge system to make this possible. The system has interlocking gears that are hidden and cannot be seen by users making it very appealing.
The main display is QXGA+ resolution (4.2:3), and when it’s folded, a smaller 4.6-inch HD+ (12:9) display is used for the phone mode.
To solve the problem of having to design a foldable battery, the phone has two batters. Each of the two batteries lie on each of the sides of the phone. The batteries are rated at 4,380mAh.
With a 7nm processor, a 12GB RAM and a universal flash storage of 512GB, this phone will be twice as fast as other smartphones.
Samsung has pitched to its customers the phone as high end. The phone will also reportedly be able to wirelessly charge other devices while it is charging.

A Nairobian Tried Telling Kisumu Residents Raila Odinga Destroyed Them. They Disagree
Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi was in Kisumu to launch Kisumu Justice Center and he had an opportunity to speak to residents of Kondele estate where he decided to focus his speech on a topic that goes deep into the hearts of Kisumu residents, Raila Odinga.
Boniface Mwangi feels like Kisumu Residents are only used as tissue paper by politicians and then left to suffer when the election period is over.
The famous Twitter personality sought to convince his audience that the handshake happened and the politicians forgave each other while they still remained in their state of suffering.
A huge section of Raila Odinga's supporters feel that the handshake between president Uhuru Kenyatta and former prime minister was a good thing that created a conducive environment for business in the lakeside city and paved the way for dialogue on some historical injustices that the people in that region have had to endure by virtue of supporting several opposition outfits over the years.
Boniface Mwangi ran for the Starehe Constituency seat in the last election and failed miserably after coming 3rd in an election that was widely seen as a two horse race between Steve Mbogo and musician Jaguar who eventually won.
Kisumu, western Kenya is reaping the fruits of bad politics. Raila Odinga politics has destroyed Kisumu, find a longer version of my speech here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKg1KENSwpM … I officially opened@KondeleJustice centre. Exclusive Photos: How Moses Kuria Celebrated His Birthday With Rachel Shebesh At Kiza
Gatundu South Member of Parliament and 2022 presidential candidate took some time away from his busy political life to celebrate his birthday at one of Nairobi's top city club Kiza with friends and colleagues.
The MP chose to celebrate his 48th birthday at the high end Kiza Lounge with friends and one of them was former Nairobi City County women representative Rachel Shebesh. She is currently the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs.
This is the first time in many days Rachel Shebesh is appearing in public ever since she lost her seat to the current women representative Esther Passaris.
Dennis Itumbi took to his Instagram to wish Moses Kuria a happy birthday in a message that was flowered with quotes.
Happy Birthday my friend Hon. Moses Kuria. These two quotes that you have shared over the years, are my birthday wishes to you;
1. "The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress and grow." - Thomas Paine
2. "Somewhere in the world there is a defeat for everyone. Some are destroyed by defeat, and some made small and mean by victory. Greatness lives in one who triumphs equally over defeat and victory." - John Steinbeck
