When the story of Kenyan musicians shall be told, there must be given room to the few who did it for naught but art’s sake and of those there will read a chapter on the tide that came in with Lisa Oduor-Noah for truly it is self-evident there shall come no other alike.
In a time when whim and unfiltered thoughts make the cut and play on radio, in our homes and become political anthems, she has given a new lease of life for the most potent art form available to all and sundry. Her claim to the kingdom of music in Kenya is not self-imposed, her dominance of the wild wanderings in many a listener’s heart is gentle, salving and her creations are a whole more to behold.
She’s not secular, she’s not gospel, she’s not mumbling nor is she getting through words like yours truly. What Lisa Oduor-Noah is, every ear that hears must acknowledge her transcendence. This may be in passing or by staying rooted listening to the dangly things off your ears say for half an hour because that is how long her latest EP runs.
Her music brings to mind the elements and man in their never ceasing struggle to one up each other, drives you across a whole vista of emotions and one time the mind-blowing gem hits you smack in the face.
Founding member of the Golden divas and with musical influences from rhumba to classic soul, it is a wonder she can contain all this in a humble head. You can tell from the onset that this is not some happy go lucky bony lass who has to do music because she can sing and was once entertainment for deaf aunt Lynda.
Unashamed of life with the fickleness it packs, she has tempered these experiences with studious effort and laid each on top of the other. Motivation for her is abundant in everyday activities of living, socializing, thoughts, breaking bread, memories and whichever cup is served, she drinks with this firm hand of faith.
Where men despair and many fear to venture she finds herself properly steeped in holding on to that scarlet thread of faith and in the end of it all brings to mind that ever dreamy Pauline cry, increasing from glory to glory. Rising from this abyss necessitates that she has a keener grasp and appreciation of the subtlety in her field, to weave through it all and delight in all things as they unfold.
Lisa Oduor-Noah is the type of person who opens for Parliament Funk and sings in Mandarin, a friend of all and a versatile specimen of musical prowess just budding in the morning sun petals still dripping dew. Formidable thinker as well, she lets it show with a simplistic summary of what the effectual life should be when lived and not attended.
The celebrities and status music has given her access to, she has used to sound and by some degree settle the humanity of Hollywood. People living their lives with very inch of hair they can spare against those masses attending life like some drab puppet show.
Full of hearty laughs that remind no one of anything except that Lisa laughed, the infectious bubble spreads engulfing all in its vicinity with the all too familiar embrace, she sparks joy.
Undoubtedly, she is an act everyone worth their weight in salt should listen to. If not for the emotion of music, then at least for the load shedding, warm and rich vibes she puts out and the occasional fogging of the senses. It is a strange combination that nonetheless works effectively.
