The Tragic Life Story of Andrew Kibe and How He Is Fighting Back

The Tragic Life Story of Andrew Kibe and How He Is Fighting Back

In his twenties, Andrew Kibe was doing well for himself and everything was going according to plan. He got into a marriage and had many hopes for the future he hoped to build with his beloved wife.

Life had other plans for Andrew Kibe. In a sad twist of events, the marriage ended in a tragedy that left Andrew Kibe bruised and in a hole he has never climbed out of.

In his thirties, Andrew Kibe would then find solace in the church. Together with childhood friends like Robert Burale, he served in several churches in Langata in true evangelism fashion carrying a Bible around and performing miracles.

Picking himself up, Andrew Kibe ran for the Langata parliamentary seat hoping that the neighborhood he had grown up in would send him to parliament. He borrowed money and ran a campaign that ended in a humiliating defeat.

At the end of it all, Andrew Kibe was left heavy in debt and deflated from the grueling elections.

Reflecting on the days preceding the election day, he came into the realization that the people he thought were his friends had blindly led him into the fire, while embezzling the funds he had entrusted him with and not being honest with him about his prospects.

As the careers of his friends in church progressed, Andrew Kibe stagnated. He claims that the Christians refused to make him a pastor because he wasn't a liar. He left the church and turned to the bottle.

Andrew Kibe then decided to fly to India. He claims he was working on an app idea. When he returned in 2016, the internet was not prepared for him and the new direction he was taking.

Armed with a phone camera on the rooftop of an unfinished building in Langata, Andrew Kibe started uploading videos that spewed hate on women and called upon men to be vigilant.

He urged men to hit and run, trashed the concept of relationships and marriage, and preached against everything he stood for during his church days with Robert Burale.

In a barrage of videos that never stopped coming, Andrew Kibe quickly became a villain in a small community of dissatisfied men that needed a hero. He soon had an army that shared his videos everywhere and before anyone knew it, he was a household name.

Andrew Kibe ended up on NRG Radio, running the radio's breakfast show with Kamene Goro. Their on-air chemistry was embraced by the audience and their prospects rose so fast. They were soon poached by Radio Africa.

Quickly reading the room, Kamene Goro cleaned up her act and settled at Radio Africa where the rules were more stringent due to tougher scrutiny by the regulators and advertisers. Andrew Kibe refused to compromise.

His abrasive nature earned him a few enemies, and when time to renew their contracts came, he was shown the door.

Kibe thought other radio stations would run to him with deals, he would soon realize he was too hot to touch. He had been blacklisted by the mainstream media.

He lost his house, his car and friends, he slept on the couch of the friend that remained, and spent his days on Instagram drowning in alcohol and debt.

Many who know him have described him as an alcoholic who lacks the work ethic to keep a job or utilize his talents.

He has also been accused of being juvenile on the issue of relationships and trying to blame all women for the problems he couldn't resolve with one.

Andrew Kibe has since moved to the United States where he lives with an old friend in Texas.

As the clock ticks on his Visa, it remains to be seen how Andrew Kibe will fight the demons waiting for him in Langata Estate.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmunity condition(autoimmunity is a condition in which cells known as antibodies designated to protect our bodies' systems from harm/infection accidentally attacks our normal tissues).

Rheumatoid arthritis causes swelling and damage to the tissues at the joints and may later progress and start damaging organs. It normally affects joints symmetrically(both joints or joints parallel to each other).

Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Some of the symptoms that one may have includes; joints pain, joints swelling, joint deformities, loss of joints function.

Risk factors of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Gender(females are more predisposed than males), middle age, obesity, smoking and family history of rheumatoid arthritis.

Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis

This can be determined by taking the patient's ailment history and examination.

Some of the tests that may be done in diagnosis making includes: Rheumatoid factor, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, Antinuclear antibodies and C- reactive protein.

Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis

It does not resolve completely. Treatment therefore focuses on controlling its progression/organs damage and improve quality of life of the patient.

Treatment modalities can be classified into three categories; medical(use of disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs- DMARDs), surgical repair for extreme joints damage, healthy lifestyle/diet(exercise/controlled alcohol intake/stop smoking, controlled fat content intake, taking more vegetables/fruits and whole grains).

Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Some of the complications that may be encountered include: osteoporosis (softening of the bones hence making one to be susceptible to fractures), respiratory failure due to the scarring of the lungs' tissues, lowered immunity hence making one to be prone to infections, cardiac failure due to heart damage, lymphoma which is a type of blood cancer.

Health Mondays: A Sharp Focus on Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Health Mondays: A Sharp Focus on Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis was initially known as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. It is a type of arthritis that affects children below the age of 16 years.

It is an autoimmunity condition(a condition in which cells meant to protect the body's systems from harm/infection, accidentally turns to fight it's normal cells).

It's duration varies, it may resolve after a few months however in some cases it may prolong for several years.

Symptoms of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Some of the symptoms that one may present with are joints stiffness especially in the morning, joints pain, swollen warm joints, reddening of the joints, recurrent fevers.

Types of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

  1. Oligo articular: affects less than five joints.
  2. Polyarticular: affects five or more joints
  3. Enthesitis related: involves bones at their connection to tendons and ligaments.
  4. Systemic: affects the entire body.

Diagnosis of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

This is first made by taking the patient's history and examining them.

Based on the patient's state, some of the the following diagnostic tests may be done: Rheumatoid factor, Antinuclear antibodies, C- reactive protein, X-ray/MRI may be done to rule out other possible inflammatory conditions.

Treatment of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

The modality of treatment will be determined by the grade of the patient's condition.

The treatment strategy focuses on- resolving pain and inflammation, preventing further disease progression/joints or organs damage and improving quality of life.

The treatment modalities are in three categories:

  1. Medical(e.g Disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs/non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
  2. Surgical repair in case of a marked joint damage.
  3. Healthy lifestyle(non-aggressive exercises, balanced diet).

Complications of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Some of the complications that may develop includes- stunted growth, uneven limbs, anemia, visual limitations, heart failure.

Osteoarthritis in Africa: Symptoms, Treatments, and Causes

Osteoarthritis in Africa: Symptoms, Treatments, and Causes

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is a degenerative chronic condition that wears out joints' cartilages(slippery protective tissues covering bones' endings at the Joints).

Cartilages serves to cushion bones' endings at the joints from friction. It can affect any joint however it commonly affects joints at the hands, knees, hips and the spine.

The difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

Osteoarthritis is a wear and tear condition whereas rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmunity condition, there is no morning stiffness in osteoarthritis but in case it is experienced it doesn't last more than thirty minutes.

However morning stiffness is a common feature in rheumatoid arthritis, pain gets worse with increased usage of the affected joint in osteoarthritis; however there is no marked relationship of pain with activity in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis affects joints randomly whereas rheumatoid arthritis affects joints symmetrically(parallel to each other).

Symptoms of osteoarthritis

Some of the symptoms at the affected joint/joints include pain, stiffness, swelling, tenderness, cracking sounds/grating sensation on movement.

Risk factors for osteoarthritis

Older age, sex(females are more predisposed), congenital joints/bones deformities, obesity, joints injuries, genetics(people with a positive osteoarthritis family history are more predisposed), persistent stress to a certain joint/joints due to activities.

Diagnosis of Osteoarthritis

Mostly made by taking a patient's history and examining him/her.Lab diagnostic tests are normally not essential however they may be conducted to rule out other inflammatory conditions.

Imaging e.g X-ray or MRI may also be done to rule out other possible related conditions or to determine the extent of the damage.

Treatment of Osteoarthritis

There are several modalities of treatment. The choice of treatment will be determined by the patient's state/the disease level.

They include- medical(e.g corticosteroids and nonsteroidal agents), surgical repair in extreme joint damage and lifestyle/conservative management(e.g non aggressive exercises, balanced diet, physiotherapy & assistive devices such as crutches).

Health Mondays: What is Systemic Lupus Erythematosus(SLE)?

Health Mondays: What is Systemic Lupus Erythematosus(SLE)?

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is the most common type of lupus.

SLE is an autoimmune condition(a condition in which the body's immune system accidentally fights it's normal tissues).

It may later progress from tissues to organs.

Symptoms of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus(SLE)

This condition shares alot of symptoms with various inflammatory diseases however majority of people with it presents with unique clustered rashes at the cheeks and the nasal bridge forming a butterfly shape.

The symptoms' onset may be rapid or slow/marked or mild/short-lived or permanent.

Symptoms presentation will be determined by the systems affected; they are as follows: butterfly-shaped group of rashes at the cheeks and the nasal bridge, fever, fatigue, joints pain/stiffness, shortness of breath/chest pain, headache/confusion,sun sensitivity rashes, hair loss, fingers turning white or blue and tingling on cold exposure(Raynaud's phenomenon).

Risk factors of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus(SLE)

Gender(females are more predisposed), Age(15 - 45 years aged are more susceptible), genetics(people with a positive family history of SLE are more predisposed), Race(it's more common among Africa-Americans/Hispanics/Asian-Americans), overwhelming physical/emotional stress, extreme Ultra violet light exposure, certain viral infections and certain anti-hypertensive/anti-seizure drugs.

Diagnosis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus(SLE)

There is no definite diagnostic screening modality.Diagnosis is normally made by taking the patient's history with an evaluation of his/her signs and symptoms.

Some antibody tests and imaging however may be done for the purposes of ruling out other possible inflammatory conditions/supporting the diagnosis made.

Treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus(SLE)

This will be determined by the state of the patient and the disease level of progression.

The treatment may include anti-inflammatory/analgesic agents, steroid based creams for the skin and corticosteroids agents to reduce immune response.

Complications of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus(SLE)

This may include- heart failure, respiratory failure, stroke and kidney failure.

Leukemia in Kenya: Symptoms, Causes, Types, Diagnosis, Treatment

Leukemia in Kenya: Symptoms, Causes, Types, Diagnosis, Treatment

Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the primary(early) blood building cells and the bone marrow(a soft spongy tissue found in the canal of bones that produces blood cells). It majorly affects the white blood cells.

Leukemia causes abnormal multiplication of the affected cells. These abnormal cells that don't function or doesn't function properly later outnumbers the normal function blood cells leading to deficiency in their services to the body.

Symptoms of Leukemia

It doesn't have well defined/specific symptoms hence can easily be missed at it's initial stages.

Some of the symptoms that may present are as follows- headache, excessive night sweats, fever alternating with chills, weight loss, fatigue, recurrent episodes of infection, easy bleeding/bruising and bone pain/tenderness.

Risk factors for Leukemia

There is no known cause for this condition scientifically however there are certain factors that have shown positive increased risk for it's development such as follows:

A positive family history of leukemia, certain genetic disorders e.g Down Syndrome, previous cancer treatments, exposure to certain industrial chemicals e.g benzene and smoking.

Classification of Leukemia

It is classified based on it's rate of progression and based on the cells type involved as follows:

Based on the rate of progression

  • Acute leukemia which consists of immature cells which divide at a high rate.
  • Chronic leukemia: it's cells are slightly matured and the rate of progression is low.

Based on the cells type involved

  • Lymphocytic/lymphoblastic leukemia: this affects lyphoid/lymphocytes which are cells that constitutes the immune system.
  • Myelogenous/myeloid leukemia: this affects myeloid cells which serves to give rise to red and white blood cells/platelets producing cells.

Types of Leukemia

  1. Acute lymphocytic leukemia(ALL)-: It's common in pediatrics but can also affect adults.
  2. Acute myelogenous leukemia(AML): it's a common type of leukemia generally. It affects both pediatrics/adults but it's more common among the adults.
  3. Chronic Lymphocytic(CLL): it's the common chronic leukemia in adults.Symptom take a long time before presenting.
  4. Chronic Myelogenous leukemia(CML): Mainly affects adults, presents with a few symptoms or none for a prolonged period of time before they manifest.

Diagnosis of Leukemia

This will be arrived at by taking the patient's history and examining him/her then based on their state some of the following diagnostic tests/imaging may be done- complete blood count, blood smear, bone marrow biopsy, spinal tap: CT- scan and MRI.

Treatment of Leukemia

This will be determined by the patient's general well-being/disease stage. Some of the options that may be adopted includes- chemotherapy, radiation, biologic therapy, stem cell transplant and surgery.

Gout In Kenya: The Painful Rheumatic Disease Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

Gout In Kenya: The Painful Rheumatic Disease Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

Gout is a condition that results from build-up of excessive uric acid in the blood which will cause swelling and pain mostly in one of the big toes however other joints may also get affected.

Other joints that may get involved includes- ankle, knee, fingers, wrist and elbow joints.

How It Happens

Uric acid is formed from the breakdown of purines which are substances found naturally within the body and other foods e.g red meat, sea food, alcoholic beverages and fructose(sugar) sweetened refined drinks.

After it's production, uric acid is supposed to be excreted via the kidneys in the urine however due to kidney problems, there may be inadequate uric acid excretion leading to it's excessive build-up in the body.

In some cases the kidneys may be functioning normally however the body may abnormally produce excess uric acid that may be beyond the kidneys' capacity to excrete.

The accumulated retained uric acid will then form crystals known as urate crystals which are need like sharp substances that will cause pain and swelling at the joints.

Symptoms of Gout

Symptoms are classified into asymptomatic, acute gout symptoms and chronic gout symptoms.

In asymptomatic stage, there is no pain/swelling/any discomfort despite the high uric acid levels in the body.

In acute stage, excruciating pain and swelling is experienced majorly affecting one of the big toes though other joints may also get affected.

The acute stage attack normally lasts between 12 hours to 24 hours though it can sometimes get prolonged between 3 days to 10 days.

Chronic stage is normally longstanding however the symptoms are not acute.

Some of the symptoms that one may present with include acute joint pain, joint swelling and reddening/hotness of the joints, limited mobility of the affected joint.

Risk factors

A positive family history of gout, frequent high purine content diet(red meat, sea food), obesity, chronic renal disease, high alcohol consumption, obesity, diabetes melitus, hypertension, thyroid disease, prolonged use of certain medications e.g diuretics/aspirin, and antirejection medications in organ transplant.

Diagnosis

This is made by taking the patient's history and physical examination. Diagnostic tests such as the affected joint's fluid uric acid levels and X-ray may also be done.

Treatment

This will be determined by the disease stage and the general health state of the patient.

Some of the drugs that may be employed include analgesics e.g NSAIDS and corticosteroids, attack blockers e.g probenacid and xanthine oxidase inhibitors.
For severe joint damage, surgical intervention may be considered.

Complications

Delayed treatment may cause joint damage which may lead to arthritis development.

Other complications includes- kidney failure and hard nodules deposits known as tophi beneath the skin of the affected joints.

Diabetes Mellitus: The Increasing Burden in Kenya, Here's What You Should Know

Diabetes Mellitus: The Increasing Burden in Kenya, Here's What You Should Know

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the prevalence of diabetes in Kenya is at 3.3% and predicts a rise to 4.5% by 2025.

With non-communicable diseases being the leading cause of death globally, diabetes mellitus is the 4th main contributor. But what exactly is diabetes mellitus?

These are groups of conditions that are characterized by causing high blood glucose levels.

The excessive build-up of glucose in the blood results from lack of insulin production or inadequate insulin production or body cells insensitivity to the insulin being produced.

Body Glucose Processing

Normally food will be broken down into simple glucose forms by the digestive system. The formed glucose will then be taken into the blood.

A chemical known as insulin produced by pancreas cells will then stream the formed glucose now in blood into the body cells.

At the cells the glucose will be utilized for energy production and the remaining will be converted into a chemical form known as glycogen which can later be broken down into glucose for energy needs whenever the blood glucose level is low.

Types of Diabetes

Pre-diabetes

Here the blood glucose level is above normal however it hasn't gone overboard for it to qualify to be classified as diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes(Juvenile diabetes)

The body's pancreas cells don't produce insulin that is required in the uptake of glucose from the blood stream into the cells.

It's commonly diagnosed in children and in young adults though it can also be found in the middle aged people.

Type 2 diabetes

It is characterized by inadequate insulin production by the pancreas cells or insensitivity of the body cells to the insulin being produced.

It's commonly diagnosed in the middle aged people however it can still be found in children and young adults. It is the most common type of diabetes.

Gestational diabetes

It's a type of diabetes that may develop during the period of ones pregnancy due to the elevation of certain hormones that may make the body cells to be insensitive to the insulin being produced.

It later resolves after delivery. It increases the risk of one developing diabetes type 2 later.

Type 1 and 2 diabetes symptoms

Increased urination frequency, increased episodes of thirst, fatigue, extreme hunger episodes, blurring vision, weight loss(in type 1), increased infections frequency e.g UTI, slow healing wounds.

Type 1 risk factors

Presence of destructive immune cells that destroys pancreatic cells which produces insulin, a positive family history of type 1 diabetes, extreme viral infections that may destroy pancreas cells.

Pre- diabetes/type 2 risk factors

Middle age, excessive weight, inactivity/sedentary lifestyle, positive family history of pre-diabetes/type 1 diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, low levels of HDL(which is a type of good cholesterol)/high triglycerides levels in the body, and race.

Gestational diabetes risk factors

Excessive weight gain before the pregnancy, a positive family history of gestational diabetes, and race(Blacks, Hispanics and Asian-Americans).

Diagnostic tests for diabetes

HbA1c(glycated hemoglobin)

This test measures the average blood glucose levels in the past recent 2 to 3 months as follows; 4 percent to 5.6 percent (considered normal), 5.7 percent to 6.4 percent (classified as pre-diabetes-) and 6.5 percent and above(classified as diabetes melitus).

Random blood sugar(RBS)

This is a blood glucose measuring modality that can be used at any point of the day irregardless of the last time that one fed.

The measuring ranges are as follows; 4.0 to 7.7mmol/l(considered normal), 7.8 to 11.0mmol/l(classified as pre-diabetes) and 11.1mmol/l and above(classified as diabetes melitus).

Fasting blood sugar(FBS)

This test is done after one has starved for 8 to 10 hours. The measuring ranges are as follows; 4.0 to 5.5mmol/l(considered normal), 5.6 to 6.9mmol/l(classified as pre-diabetes) and 7.0mmol/l and above(classified as diabetes).

Oral glucose tolerance test

Here one starves first for 8 to 10 hours then a fasting blood sugar is taken first after which the person is given 75Mg of glucose if he/she is an adult and 1.75Mg/ Kg but not exceeding 75Mg cumulatively if it's for a child.

The glucose is to be taken within 5 minutes at most then blood sugar test is done after  2 hours. The measuring ranges are as follows; 4 to 7.7mmol/l(considered normal), 7.8 to 11.00mmol/l(classified as pre-diabetes) and 11.1mmol/l and above(classified as diabetes melitus).

Treatment

A part from gestational and sometimes pre-diabetes, the other types of diabetes are chronic and therefore they don't resolve.

Medications therefore are meant to prevent further disease progression and improve the quality of life.

There are several types of medications for diabetes and the choice will therefore be determined by the type of diabetes that one has/the general well-being of the patient e.g artificial insulin for type 1 diabetes and oral biguanides/sulfonylureas for diabetes type 2.

Complication of pre-diabetes is the development of diabetes type 2.

Complications of diabetes type 1 and 2

Nerves damage(neuropathy), eyes damage(retinopathy), cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer's disease, foot damage making it susceptible to chronic wounds.

Complications of gestational diabetes

To the mother - pre-eclampsia(high blood pressure, protein in urine and swollen legs in pregnancy), subsequent gestational diabetes in future pregnancies, diabetes type 2 development.

To the baby - being overly big, low blood sugar after delivery, increased risk of type 2 diabetes development later, dying shortly after being delivered.

Health Mondays: A Focus On Rheumatic Fever

Health Mondays: A Focus On Rheumatic Fever Kenya

Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory(swelling) condition that may affect the joints, heart, skin and brain.

It normally develops as a complication of throat infection(strep throat/scarlet fever) by a certain bacterium called group A streptococcus.

This happens mostly due to lack or under-treatment of the throat infection by the group A streptococcus bacterium.

Rheumatic fever on average develops 2 to 4 weeks after the throat infection.

The group A streptococcus bacterium has a certain protein in it similar to one also present in human tissues.

This will bring "confusion" in certain cells known as antibodies that normally protects us from infection, resulting into a certain state known as autoimmunity.

In autoimmunity, our body's antibodies starts destroying/fighting our normal cells accidentally as it fights the group A streptococcus.

This may later give rise to several organs damage if not treated.

Rheumatic Fever Symptoms

  • Fever.
  • Fatigue.
  • Joints pain.
  • Swollen/tender joints.
  • Chest  pain.
  • Uncoordinated body movements/emotional outbursts(this happens once there is brain involvement, the condition is known as Sydenham chorea).

Rheumatic Fever Risk Factors

  • Environmental(overcrowded places/poor sanitation).
  • Untreated or under treated group A streptococcus bacterium infection.
  • Family(certain people have an inheritable gene that highly predisposes them to develop rheumatic fever when infected by the streptococcus).

Health Mondays: A Focus On Rheumatic Heart Disease

Rheumatic Heart Disease
Rheumatic heart disease is a chronic condition in which the heart valves are damaged as a result of an inflammatory process caused by a certain condition known as rheumatic fever.

Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory condition that develops after throat infection by a bacterium known as group A- Streptococcus.

It may take time(even 10 to 20 years) before rheumatic heart disease develops after the rheumatic fever presenting.

Statistically, up to 60 percent of people with rheumatic fever will likely later develop rheumatic heart disease as a complication.

Symptoms

  • Chest discomfort.
  • Chest pain.
  • Strained breathing.
  • Feeling of your heartbeat.
  • Fatigue.
  • Lightheadedness/dizziness.
  • Swelling of the ankles/feet.

Health Mondays: A Focus On Infective Endocarditis

Infective Endocarditis Kenya
Endocarditis is a condition characterized by inflammation(swelling) of the inner lining of the heart's chambers and valves known as endocardium.

If the cause of the inflammation is infection then it is known as infective endocarditis.

The common organisms associated with this infection are normally of bacterial origin though some infections can also be caused by fungal organisms.

Infections due to fungal organisms normally take longer to respond to medication as compared to those caused by bacterial organisms.

Symptoms

Legs and abdominal swelling, chest pain, strained breathing, tiredness, fever alternating with chills, muscular/joints pain, presence of blood in the urine, loss of weight, pain below the left rib cage due to the swelling of the spleen as a complication and red spots at the palms/feet (a state known as Janeway lesions).

Samia Suluhu Hassan Sworn In As Sixth President Of Tanzania

Samia Suluhu Hassan Sworn In As Sixth President Of Tanzania

The United Republic of Tanzania has just handed East Africa its first female president after Samia Suluhu Hassan took oath as the sixth president of the nation.

Wearing a red hijab, Samia Suluhu Hassan made history in an event that was witnessed by two former presidents.

She will now lead 58 million Tanzanians beaten by a pandemic that has left havoc in its wake killing thousands and wearing out the nation's healthcare system.

The 61 year old inspected a military parade and received a cannon salute from men in uniform she will command for the next five years, and possibly beyond.

Samia Suluhu Hassan takes over after the death of John Pombe Magufuli, a bulldozer who sought to end corruption in government and put his people first before being clipped by a virus he handled in a different way from other heads of state.

Many are eager to see what path the president from Zanzibar will take in her tackling of corona virus. Her predecessor had vowed not to procure vaccines until local experts had deemed the vaccines safe for Tanzanians.

Personal Health: What To Ask About Endometriosis

Personal Health: What To Ask About Endometriosis

Njambi Koikai, a 32 year old TV and radio personality based in Nairobi, had a promising career in the Kenyan media industry before a health condition brought her to her knees and on the verge of death.

Njambi had endured 18 painful years of endometriosis before her lungs collapsed and had to travel to the United States of America for specialized treatment.

She majorly depended on well wishers to fund the costly medical procedures and at the end of it all had no job to cover her recovery process or pay her bills.

Janet Mbugua

She is not alone. A number of famous people in Kenya like journalist Janet Mbugua and comedian Zulekha have also shared their experiences with endometriosis. But there are thousands of others without a platform going through the worst.

Many women in the country are going through untold suffering in the hands of endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a disorder in which tissue similar to that lining the uterine cavity(endometrium)develops in another part of the body outside the uterine cavity.

According to medical specialists we talked to, 10 - 15 percent of all women within the reproductive stage and 70 percent of women with a history of chronic pelvic pain are at risk of developing endometriosis.

Signs and Symptoms

The condition expresses itself in the form of pelvic pain (more intense before the menstrual flow then reduces as the flow resolves), crampy abdominal pain during s3xual intercourse, crampy abdominal pain during bowel movement/urination, infertility, constipation, bloody urine, irregular or heavy menstrual flow, chest pain/coughing blood in case of migration to the lungs and headache/convulsions in case of migration to the brain.

Pain severity cannot be used as a measuring parameter of the endometriosis extent. One may have an advanced endometriosis but with little or no pain at all while in other case one may have extreme pain but with a mild endometriosis.

Causes of Endometriosis

Endometriosis may be caused by accidental migration of the endometrial  cells via blood vessels or lymphatic vessels to other parts of the body, and scarring due to surgery e.g C-S or hysterectomy.

Retrograde menstruation- whereby blood flows backwards with endometrial cells through Fallopian tube into the pelvic cavity hence growing outside the uterus is also a cause.

Immune system disorders that may lead into failure of recognition of foreign endometrial cells hence failure in destroying them and accidental peritoneal cells transformation by hormones or immune factors are also causes.

Risk Factors for Endometriosis

Heavy menstrual flow that lasts more than seven days, short menstrual cycle less than twenty seven days, not giving birth, menstrual flow beginning early (in age), late menopause, extremely high estrogen levels in the body or exposure, low body mass, and Genetics(family history of endometriosis).

Diagnosis

According to the physicians we talked to, Endometriosis may be identified through history taking of the patient/physical examination together with diagnostic modalities such as abdominal/transvagiπal ultrasound. This modality may identify cysts associated with endometriosis though it may not give definite signs of endometriosis and Laparoscopy which shows signs of the endometrial tissues outside the uterine cavity.

Treatment

Endometriosis can be managed by drugs majorly hormonal therapy or by surgery. The choice of treatment will be guided by the severity of the patient's endometriosis.

Complications

Complications that may arise from endometriosis include fertility problems e.g infertility or subfertility, and Cancer e.g ovarian cancer or adenocarcinoma.

How International Media Reported The Death Of John Pombe Magufuli

How International Media Reported The Death Of John Pombe Magufuli

The death of the fifth president of Tanzania is making international headlines with many of the international media reporting on it choosing to focus on his infamous denial of the coronavirus.

The death comes after two weeks of speculation about his whereabouts when he stopped making public appearances.

The speculations about the death of John Pombe Magufuli were fueled by opposition leader Tundu Lissu who went on Twitter to claim the life of the president was in danger after he suffered a stroke.

This declaration by the opposition leader came days before the government of Tanzania formally gave any update on the health of the president.

Here's how the news was reported after the vice president (now president) made the death announcement.

John Pombe Magufuli Won Many Battles For Tanzania Except Covid

John Pombe Magufuli Won Many Battles For Tanzania Except Covid

The late president of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli, took over the nation from a meek Jakaya Kikwete and set his countrymen on the warpath against foreign influence and corrupt government officials.

He was widely seen as a man of the people with his populist decrees that got him wide admiration from neighboring countries.

John Pombe Magufuli rarely traveled abroad, instead choosing to delegate such duties to members of his cabinet in a bid to slash government spending.

He was also very critical of loans from Western and Asian countries and was reported to have cancelled some loans his predecessors had secured for improvement of infrastructure.

President Magufuli was also known to be extremely volatile with how he handled disputes with neighbors, especially Kenya. Many a times, Kenya Airways has found itself banned from the Tanzanian airspace due to diplomatic tussles.

At the height of the covid pandemic when Kenya closed her borders, Tanzania went above and beyond to frustrate Kenyan truck drivers at the Namanga border.

It remains to be seen how far the damage caused by his handling of the pandemic will go.

As a result of him denying the existence of the virus in Tanzania, many Tanzanians without the resources to seek healthcare abroad lost their lives.

In the months leading to his death, covid struck very close to Pombe Magufuli, with the virus ravaging through his cabinet and circle of close friends.

Even in the face of death, the president refused to change his mind on how to handle the virus and urged the ministry of health not to put into place plans to purchase vaccines for the masses.

John Pombe Magufuli Is Dead, Here's What We Know So Far

John Pombe Magufuli Is Dead, Here's What We Know So Far

The vice president of Tanzania has just announced the passing of 61 year old John Pombe Magufuli due to heart related complications.

This announcement brings to an end weeks of speculations about the whereabouts of the president of the East African nation.

The president made international news headlines when he declared that Tanzania would not enter into a lock-down to contain the coronavirus pandemic. His Ugandan and Kenyan counterparts had moved fast to lock down major cities to slow down cases in their respective countries.

John Pombe Magufuli then went ahead to stop the tally of reported cases in Tanzania. Hospitals also started writing "breathing complications" and "pneumonia" as causes of death during the same period.

During the same period, wearing of masks and social distancing was not mandatory in Tanzania. Some Tanzanian citizens reported being harassed by the police for wearing masks. They were accused of attempting to cause panic.

President Magufuli also made clear his skepticism about the dangers of the virus. He urged Tanzanians to regularly steam themselves in herbal medicine to avoid contracting the virus.

The president was seen on numerous occasions attending the funerals of those who had died of corona related complications. At no such times did he wear a mask.

Beneath Poverty And Drug Abuse, Gabiro Mtu Necessary Is A Lyrical Force

Beneath Poverty And Drug Abuse, Gabiro Mtu Necessary Is A Lyrical Force

Starting out as a traditional band member back in 2013, Gabiro Mtu Necessary drew his earliest inspirations from the likes of Octopizzo, Lucky Dube, Khuli Chana, Juliani and a host of others.

Having had a brief spell at Maseno University studying Finance and later Android and Cellular Software development before he dropped out in his third year to pursue a career in music.

Gabiro was always in touch with his music which spurred him to write his 1st song in 2014 titled Story. The song went on to bag him an award at the prestigious Tecno Vybez Awards that same year.

He later got back to studio and released another single, “Naitwa Gabiro.” During this time, he met the talented producer, Malique and together, they created a new direction for Gabiro’s music and released the hit single, Ujumbe.

In the same year, a number of collaborations were released by Gabiro and within few months of their release, the songs gained massive airplay on radio and in clubs.

As a result of the success of the singles and collaborations a household name came into being, Mtu Necessary.

He is steadily building a reputation as Kisumu’s best lyricist, and also shares his personal struggles through his art. From working as a matatu tout to battling drug abuse, Gabiro’s ability to tell stories separates him from rap music's status quo.

Hip-hop inspired me to persevere and self-educate myself. When I was going through it, the thing that held me down was an old computer at my uncle’s place that I stored thousands of downloaded beats in. That’s why I’m so loyal to the cause and loyal to the culture. I feel like I owe it to Hip-hop to do the best I can.

While many rappers tell us their story, Gabiro possesses the ability to bring you into his world and show it to you. Perhaps his most notable song, Story, is a story of stories that happen in real life but are often ignored. This song discusses bullying, police shootings, drug abuse and political injustice.

Gabiro's diversity has seen him transition from not only being a rapper but also the best lyricist as is evident on his current releases, Bad Girl Loving and Kus Kus.

He has worked with both young and well-known artists across the globe in both musical and non-musical collaborations including and not limited to Kidis, Wyre, Ketchup,Owuor Arunga and most recently the new gengetone crew Kavirondo Gang.

Currently Gabiro has a new EP; MPITO featuring singer Asen B that has cumulatively gained more than 500,000 streams on various digital platforms.

Editor's Note:

Viagra Has A Higher Body Count Than The Kenyan Men Using It, Is It Dangerous?

Viagra Has A Higher Body Count Than The Kenyan Men Using It, But Is It As Dangerous?

Viagra is a drug covered in mystery, admired and frowned upon by Kenyan men in equal measure.

The blue pill is a man's best kept secret, often bought from the chemist under the cover of darkness.

Many late politicians, some very powerful, in the country are also rumored to have succumbed to the drug in a bid to bite more than they could chew. But what exactly is Sildenafil?

Sildenafil is a medication used to stimulate er3ctioπ in men with er3ctile dysfunction. This medication is supposed to be taken under the instructions of your physician.

People with heart conditions or with recent history of stroke may experience adverse complications when they take it.

Normally er3ction occurs when peπile nerves are stimulated. The peπile nerves then sends signals to the brain which then makes the peπile tissues to relax.

Blood then flows to the peπile tissues with the ultimate outcome of the p3πis eloπgating/thickeπing and becoming firm to enable vagiπal peπ3tratioπ.

Sildenafil therefore works by relaxing the walls of the peπile blood vessels therefore facilitating easy flow of blood in them resulting in er3ction. One will however need to be arous3d s3xua11y for his penis to start erecting.

How long does it take for it's action to start? On average it takes thirty minutes to sixty minutes for it's effects to start being experienced. Its effects on average starts diminishing gradually two hours to four hours after taking it.

Some of the side effects that one may experience after taking it include Headache, Nasal congestion, Dizziness, Strained vision, Indigestion and Priapism (an overly prolonged painful er3ctioπ that may damage the peπis)
