Boniface Mwangi Announces His Retirement From Politics And Activism

 

After more than a decade of risking his life and putting his family on the line for love of his country, photographer Boniface Mwangi has announced that he will step back from the limelight and focus on himself.

Boniface Mwangi will resign from Ukweli Party and reduce his activities on social media and try to balance the time he spends on family, friends and Kenyans.

In an emotional video, the activist said he had neglected his friends over the years and is worried he might not even have enough people to carry his casket to the grave when he dies.

Boniface Mwangi become an activist after documenting the happenings of 2007 post elections violence. He says that the violence he witnessed across the country negatively affected him and he felt the need to be involved in calling for change in governance.

He resigned from his high paying job at the Standard Group and formed Pawa 254 through which he organized protests and created awareness. He also gave artists a platform to express themselves.

Boniface Mwangi ran for the parliamentary seat of Starehe Constituency in a campaign that was fully people funded and fell short, coming a distant third behind Jaguar and Steve Mbogo.

In a video uploaded on his Twitter account today, Boniface Mwangi announced that he would not be running for public office in 2022 despite persuasions from friends and fans.

He says that politics in this country is a dirty game and he has no intentions of going through what he went through in the previous general elections.

Boniface Mwangi also says that everyday he receives disturbing videos and pictures of ordinary people seeking his help to access healthcare or justice and he has no means to handle the consequences that come with having to deal with such situations everyday.

The man, popularly known in his circles as Softie, has received death threats before for speaking truth to power. At some point, he had to flee the country to the United States after he received warnings that some people were planning to harm his family.

He has urged his fellow countrymen to stay courageous.
