TSC To Hire 12,000 New Teachers This Year
The government through the Teachers Service Commission has announced an ambitious plan to hire 12,000 new teachers every year for the next five years in an elaborate bid to curb shortages in public schools across the country.

The Teachers Service Commission in its recently released 2019-2023 Strategic Plan, says it will require a staggering total of Sh73.7 billion for the hiring of new teachers.

Sh16.4 billion will be needed each year for the next four years while the last year in the five year plan will require Sh8.1 billion from treasury.

According to a survey conducted by the Teachers Service Commission in June 2018,  the country is suffering a shortage of 96,345 teachers — 38,054 in primary and 58,291 in secondary schools. This has led to a huge Teacher:Student ratio.

The shortage in primary schools is declining due to continuous hiring by the state agency. This shortage has led to the hiring of more than 80,000 teachers by boards of management.

Some of the teachers hired by boards of management are not qualified leading to the watering down of quality of education in the country.
