Two Kenyans Pay The Ultimate Price As SGR Tunnel Collapses
The engineering marvel that is the Standard Gauge Railway. This is one of the sites at Embulmbul in Kajiado County. The project came at a hefty financial cost, now it has cost us even more.
On Monday evening, part of the Standard Gauge Railway caved in at a site in Maai Mahiu, Nakuru County. In the accident, two workers lost their lives and five more sustained injuries.

The project, run by the China Road and Bridge Construction company had contracted the workers. The survivors said that work was in progress on the bridge when a section collapsed and buried them in the rubble. Two of those covered were pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.

Reports indicate that the latest heavy rains weakened the construction.

“We heard a bang then screams followed. It true seven people were injured during the incident and, unfortunately, we have lost two of them,” said one witness

Unfortunately, the witness noted that the workers did not have any protective gear, which would have probably protected them from injuries.
Ezra Sambu, the Officer in charge at the Maai Mahiu Police Station reported that there were plans to move the injured to the Kijabe Hospital for further treatment.

The company is extending the Standard Gauge Railway to Naivasha after completing the first section that is active from Nairobi to Mombasa. To create employment, they have been hiring locals to work on the manual jobs during construction and this case will increase scrutiny on the safety standards of the workers.
