After a lengthy speculation period, Vladimir Putin has declared that he will run for President again in 2018. In the possibility that he re-clinches the seat (most likely),  Putin will have had 24 years of presidency in Russia by 2024.
The elections are set for March.
He was Russian prime minister for four years but was very powerful and still made major decisions.

“I will put forward my candidacy for the post of president of the Russian Federation,” he said.

“Russia will continue moving forwards, and nobody will ever be able to stop this forward movement,” Putin told his audience.
The only other political leader who has carried out a real campaign, is the opposition leader and anti-corruption campaigner Alexei Navalny.

Chances are high that Navalny will not be allowed on to the ballot due to a previous criminal conviction, which many think was politicized.  Navalny has said he will boycott the elections together with supporters if he is barred.

Putin was born 7 October 1952 in Leningrad (now St Petersburg). He studied law and joined KGB after university. He also served as a spy in communist East Germany.
