Murder, Thugs, Drugs : Juja Is The Devil's Playground
Juja Farm first called ‘Weru wa Ndarugu’ (Ndarugu Plains), then renamed Juja after two statues bought in West Africa named ‘Ju’ and ‘Ja’. A bustling municipality that hosts Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). With life and business, came death, drugs and crime.
At around 8pm on Thursday, 7th February, a lady and friends got marooned by thugs near Seagull restaurant in Juja. They demanded for all their valuables. All of them handed over their phones and money, except one. The lady hoped to negotiate and have her stuff, acquired through months of savings, survive. It was not to be.
In case you did not know, you can get any drug you want in Juja. Sources say you just have to know who to ask. While students are major consumers of these drugs, the social effects can be seen.
It's normal to see groups of idle youth hanging around shops and stalls eating khat and gossiping.
At night, they swing into action.
It is not particularly safe to roam around Juja in the wee hours of the morning or late at night. And that you don't run into thugs in the 4 years you have been there does not mean crime is not happening.
The case birthed a hashtag on Twitter #StopKillingJkuatStudents as many say that students are the most vulnerable and easy target for thugs.
