Kalonzo Musyoka Admits He Is A 'Watermelon'

Sometimes, the best way to diffuse a nickname is to pretend to accept it. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka admits that many call him 'watermelon' for his past decisions and he says his conscience is clear.

Bitterly telling off critics who questioned his development record, Mr Musyoka says he has "unshaken principles". It is for this reason he says, that many like to abuse him.

Speaking at the Kamba Leaders Covention in Matungulu, Kalonzo  accepts the name ‘watermelon’ and also ‘Uncle Steve’. This is because he is 'uncle' to many youths who are struggling in a jobless economy.

He said:

In 2002, everyone wanted me to be loyal to retired President Daniel Moi on his Uhuru project but I refused. That is what made Mwai Kibaki President. I disagreed with Moi on Uhuru’s candidature,”We have stood with principles. In 2010, the church was opposed to the constitutional amendment but I stood with principles. I have accepted the name watermelon.

The meeting he spoke in was themed Koma 2 and it brought together leaders in Ukambani to chart a way forward despite the opposition within the ranks of Wiper Party.

Governors from Ukambani skipped the meeting in a show of defiance and lack of faith in his leadership.

He said corruption has become too bad and it hurts the economy that it is necessary to even let your brother be arrested if he is engaged in the vice.

He says the only way to make Kenya fair is to amend the constitution in such a way that gives all Kenyan communities a chance to produce a president.

Kalonzo said that even though he was in powerful State positions, he never had billions to develop the Ukambani region like the current governors have. Despite this, he said he had to find other ways of financing and build water projects, electrification and education bursaries through his foundation.
