A Woman Who Spoke Against Police Killings Has Disappeared. Her Friends Are Worried
There are worldwide concerns over a human rights defender who went missing on Wednesday last week. The woman, Caroline Mwatha, has been described by those who knew her as a precious human being who invested her life in working to bring an end to extra judicial killings in Kenya.
Caroline Mwatha disappeared from her home in Dandora Estate, Nairobi County under unknown circumstances and the disappearance was reported at Buruburu Police Station two days later on a Friday.
Amnesty International has called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to move with speed to bring Caroline Mwatha back home.
She is a founder member and case worker with Dandora Community Social Justice Center. The center has been very vocal against police killings in the estate. They have on numerous occasions condemned the activities in a Facebook group, Nairobi Crime Free which was formerly known as Dandora Crime Free, saying the police should act in ways that align with professionalism.
The disappearance of Caroline Mwatha brings back the memories of the disappearance and consequent murder of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client and taxi driver. Their bodies were found in Ol-Donyo Sabuk River after being abducted on Mombasa Road.
