Blue Moon, Legend Brewer Owes KRA Over 1.2 Billion Shillings
The tax man could not believe when he discovered that Africa Spirits Limited had evaded over 1.2 Billion worth in taxes. They raided the company's premises in Thika but the man behind it all was nowhere to be seen.

Sources say that the man, Humphrey Kariuki received a tip that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) would raid his company to impound thousands of litres of alcoholic beverages.

He is suspected to behind fake counterfeit stamps that allowed the company to avoid paying huge amounts of money in taxes.

The company is the mother of brands such as Legend Black, Glen Rock, Blue Moon, Furaha, Legend Brandy, and Gypsy King.

According to KRA:

During the operations that commenced on the night of January 31, an estimated 21 million counterfeit excise stamps and 312,000 litres of illicit products were seized.

A joint statement by KRA and the DCI confirmed that the premises would be closed to start in depth investigations on how and why the scam succeeded.

The company has a subsidiary — Wines of the World Beverages — that purchases and distributes global brands of premium whisky and wines such as Bacardi, Zappa and Southern Comfort.

For every litre of ethanol, the government is supposed to get Sh200 in tax. Ethanol is the main component of alcoholic beverages.

DCI Boss, Mr Kinoti said that the billionaire owner will serve  as an example to why it is illegal to use shady means to make profits in Kenya.
