Fake Truths? Kenyans Slam Foreign Media For Exaggerating
It remains unclear the motive, number of injuries and/or fatalities at the Riverside attack today in Nairobi. Kenyans directed their anger at foreign media who they believe are blowing the incident out of proportion. Are foreign media biased when it comes to reporting African matters?
An article in the New York Times shows grotesque scenes in the aftermath of the Riverside terror attack. Kenyans took on twitter to express their displeasure to the writer of the article for using the gory photos.
Kenyan Business journalist Wallace Kantai started the conversation on Twitter;
The writer of the said article replied him;Dear @nytimes. What value do you add by publishing pictures of dead bodies from Nairobi? You wouldn’t do this for an attack in New York, would you? Shame on you. And also to @AP, who took the photos. @kimidefreytas @deanbaquet— Wallace Kantai (@wgkantai) January 15, 2019
Hi Wallace, I don’t decide what pictures will be used. Please contact our photo dept. Many thanks, Kimiko. https://t.co/Z2eNM5IQxS— Kimiko de Freytas-Tamura (@kimidefreytas) January 15, 2019
That is when more Kenyans joined in to support Wallace;
You have contacts at your photo department, you're just being insensitive, it's not okay.— Petty La Belle (@Kilda_) January 15, 2019
Your lack of compassion is heartbreaking.. I can feel how cold your heart is by just reading this! You shouldn't be anywhere close to covering such stories💔— Liz (@lizkadasia) January 15, 2019
Dear @kimidefreytas, this is exactly how NOT to respond to an issue as serious as the one raised by @wgkantai above 😡! @deanbaquet please address this unprofessional reporting, and this flippant attitude! @nytimes— Owiso Owiso (@Owiso_Esq) January 15, 2019
Hours later, with hundreds rescued, Kenyan security forces are still working to secure the 14 Riverside Complex that was attacked by Al Shabaab terrorists.
